The Indianapolis 500, one of the most recognized sporting events in the world. This year the Indy 500 is marked as the largest sporting event in the world with a sell-out crowd at the historic speedway. The 257K seat venue also hosts an additional 100K fans in the in-field.
A rain delay started the event late, and several drivers were out of the competition early on with a crash in the pace lap then in the 4th lap Marco Andretti collided with the wall when nudged out of a crowded field. Kyle Larson was shooting to complete in two races this day. After he finishes the Indy 500 he would fly to Charlotte, North Carolina to race in the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600. He crashed out in both races.
It was in the final lap when 28 year-old Alex Palou zips past 2022 Indy winner Marcus Ericsson and held on for the win. Interesting as Alex is racing his Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing (the same team Ericsson raced for in 2022). Palou marked this as his first win of the Indy 500, and the first Spaniard to win the Indy 500! Ericsson, now with Andretti Global came in 2nd and David Malukas of AJ Foyt Racing came in third.
As Palou rounded the track he stopped, jumped on top of his car and threw his arms in the air to cheers from the crowd. He rolled to the brick layden finish line and Winners Circle to take a swig of the traditional bottle of milk. "Best milk I have ever taken!" stated Palou.
